A Critically Sick Child and an Overdue Mortgage​

By the time *Denise had contacted FHAF she had already had a very difficult time financially.  She had fought her way back from replacing the engine and shortly thereafter, the transmission in her 15-year old Chevy Tahoe.  Denise and her husband Christopher were married in January of 2003. Almost immediately Christopher joined the military and was killed in action April of 2004 in Iraq. Christopher left Denise behind with a daughter she had from a previous marriage and a newborn baby son. 
Besides having to deal with the death of her husband, Denise found out that her son had a rare kidney disease. Basically his body was rejecting his own kidneys. In the last 6-7 years he has gone through chemo multiple times. He recently underwent a kidney biopsy and another round of chemo. Unfortunately he was allergic to the chemo used. During that time she was facing foreclosure on her home. Denise said she was able" to pull us out of foreclosure, but it out took every penny I had."
Denise was referred to FHAF by another veterans service agency. Her son had taken another turn for the worse. Having no family in the area, Denise was forced to become her son’s fulltime caregiver. This meant quitting her job and once again falling behind on her mortgage by almost three months.  Though her previous employer has since rehired Denise, it was not enough to catch up on her delinquent mortgage payments. Thus, FHAF paid her two months mortgage that was in arrears and also paid off a large outstanding “Pay Day” loan to relieve Denise of the monthly payment and exorbitant interest.
